CLOSET ORGANIZATION PART 1: Know When it’s Time to Say Goodbye
Spring cleaning will be here before you know it. Wait, today is the second official day of Spring. It’s time to purge! I sometimes have a hard time getting rid of things. There are the rules I follow to help myself through the purge.
Rule 1: Would I buy this now? Yes, get rid of it if you wouldn’t buy it if you saw it in the store today. That goes for fit, style, and has this even been made this century. Yes, six year is too long to keep that Y2K Tee. You are not going to get back into it. It is not coming back in style. If they don’t even make it any more, get rid of it.
Rule 2: The 30-Day Challenge For 30 days at the beginning of each season (or whatever time period works for your closet), force yourself to wear a new clothing combination everyday. At the end of the 30 days, get rid of everything that you never got around to wearing. If you couldn’t find a reason to wear it in those 30 days, what are the changes you will actually wear it.
Rule 3: Dial a friend As a friend whose opinion you trust to help to get rid of things. Before they get there, you have to make a commitment to yourself to listen to their advice.
Rule 4: Fine, then. Keep it. If you love it that much, make a pillow out of it. Donate it. Hide it in the garage. Just don’t put it back in your closet.
