Materials
2 – 36” length of 180# chain
4 – ½” x 2” bolts
4 – ½” nuts
2 - ½” electrical conduit, cut to half the width of the closet
2 - ¾” electrical conduit, cut to half the width of the closet
2 – ¾” plumbing pipe caps
If your original closet rod is strong enough, you will not need these two additional pipes. In place of the two conduit pipes, you can use closet rods cut to size
2 - ¾” electrical conduit, cut to the entire width of your closet
2 - ½” electrical conduit, cut to the entire width of your closet
- Ensure that your rod holders can withstand the extra weight. Mine are anchored into studs. An additional center support may be needed.
- Place the coordinating length of ½” conduit inside the ¾” conduit. This will give the pipe added structural stability.
- Place the original rod (or the full-width conduits) back into the rod holders.
- Loop one length of chain around the top of the pipe and secure the loop with the bolt. Fasten nut onto bolt.
- Repeat with other length of chain.
- With the other end of the chain, loop around half-width conduit and secure with bolt.
- Repeat on other side, ensuring the pipe is level.
- Place the pipe caps at the end of the half-width pipe. This will prevent the chains from slipping off.
