April Fools’ Foods
I normally don’t get too ambitious about April Fools’ Day pranks, but the strange food possibilities always pull me in. I admit to making a veggie meatloaf layer cake iced with mashed potatoes one year. Lots of disguised food recipes can be found on sites like April Fools’ Food Pranks - check out the Chicken Not-Pie and the Colorful Cupcakes. You can find more ideas at Fooling Around With Food.
My favorite whimsical food is made by Clare Crespo. She has a website - Yummy Fun - with recipes for things like a Jell-o Aquarium (note: Flash animation!), Flower Pot Cakes and Bugs in Amber. She also has two books full of artful food, The Secret Life of Food and Hey There, Cupcake!. She is also the inspiration for all that twinkie sushi.
