Save the Depot!
For those of us who didn’t grow up in houses with rec rooms or overflowing craft drawers (yes, I was a deprived child), a trip to the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse in Oakland was a memorable treat. The sprawling space was filled to the rafters with ReadyMade-worthy materials like styrofoam tubes, glass jars, and wacky signage. Today, after nearly 25 years of taking donations and selling random bits of arcana at rock-bottom prices, the non-profit center faces an uncertain future. Their lease is up this summer, and boardmembers are desperately searching for an inexpensive space in the area that can accomodate their extensive inventory. If you have any tips, leads, or suggestions, please email depot@east-bay-depot.org. Do it for the craft-hungry kids!
