I Majored in DIY
It was only a matter of time. Along with the graduate level seminars on Tupac Shakur and Six Feet Under, academic luminaries are now turning their attention to the DIY movement. Oxford University Press’ Journal of Design History has just published “Do It Yourself: Democracy and Design” along with an exhibition curated by Paul Atkinson … that examines three centuries of advice leaflets, manuals and guidebooks, retail catalogues, newspaper reports, magazines, and later, radio and television programs, as often the only evidence that remains of what for many has been a significant part of everyday life. Following on from the Design Centre, the exhibition will show at the Museum of Domestic Architecture in Middlesex, before travelling to New York.
