Our Feel-Good Contest: Build It and Win!
Make Something that makes a difference. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to build a mobile merchandise display for Youth Movement Records, a non-profit youth-directed recording company and development project based in Oakland. ReadyMade will give away a gift pack (including one subscription, our book ReadyMade: How to Make Almost Everything, a T-shirt, and more) to the winning entry. YMR engages youth through music, mentoring, and entrepreneurship in order to reduce violence, develop skills, and create community change. As a part of their efforts to raise money, YMR sells T-shirts and CDs at events such as concerts and fairs. The unit you built should be able to transport and display all of these items in an streamlined way.
Here’s YMR’s wish list:
- The set-up has to self-contained, all of the merchandise needs to fit into it (or it should be able to be carried on top of a suitcase.)
- It should incorporate a place for signs that describe the item and list the price
- It should allow YMR to have a banner above and below
- The display usually sits on a table that is between six to eight-feet long, and should have a vertical section from which to hang shirts.
- It needs to be stable, lightweight, and weather proof (these kids are lugging their merch around on public transit!)
- The display should address the common occurrence of people crowding the merch table and blocking the view of others behind them.
- It should be able to hold at least four different CDs, five T-shirts, at least two totes/hats/accessories, and a binder with their promotional materials in it.
YMR has its next big record release on May 27th, so we’d like to have entries coming in by the begining of June. Final deadline: June 25th. If you live far from Oakland, CA, please send us a digital picture of your mobile display with “YMR” in the subject line. If you are the winning entry, we’ll have the unit shipped to YMR and send you your goods.
It’s a feels-good-to-fire-up-your-drill kind of day!
