Make your own grass
Easter, and all the basketfuls of candy that come with it, is upon us (read: it’s this Sunday, April 8). Be you a church-goer, a Peep-eater, a nostalgic fan of It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown, or all three, please think twice before resting those chocolate bunnies and beautifully decorated eggs atop a bed of transparent Easter grass when you fill your baskets this year. To be honest, I have no idea what it’s made of (cellophane? mylar?), but considering how difficult it is just to pick it all up once the chocolate bunnies have been beheaded and all the Peeps have been microwaved, I can’t imagine it’s any good for the planet.
So.
Last week, Jon over at Happy Mundane observed the pleasing aesthetic of shredded office paper (that’s one of his beautiful photos, above; check out his post to see more). Which made me think, why not use shredded paper to fill the Easter baskets this year (not to mention gift bags for all occasions in the future)? It’s a great way to get one more use out of old newspapers, magazines, and sheets of used office paper before tossing them in the ol’ recycling bin. You probably don’t even need a shredder; just take whatever paper you’ve got lying around, cut it into semi-thin strips and crumple, and never waste money on pastel plastic that’s just going to clog the landfill (and your vacuum cleaner) again.
