If you’re going to San Francisco…
Should you find yourself in the city by the Bay in the next couple of weeks, be sure to check out these two not-to-be-missed art shows; the first, “Lovely, Dark, and Deep,” is a joint effort by sisters Lisa Congdon and Stephanie Barnes, and highlights the kind of modern craft I love. Lisa, an upcoming ReadyMade contributor, does wonderful things with collage, found objects, and paint, while Stephanie makes stuffed animals and nature scenes every adult would want perched on her shelf. This show is at Doe, a beautifully curated store/gallery in the lower Haight. I bought one of Lisa’s pieces a few months ago at Reform School in L.A., and this time found a great wedding present for a certain squirrel-obsessed pal.
The second show, “In the Shadow of this Fading Light, We Waited,” at Giant Robot SF, features the work of Marci Washington, a CCA grad student whose beautifully haunting prints were seen in our Green Design Issue. Marci’s pieces on display here include a series of lithographs and gouache portraits, and all remind me of Edith Wharton novels and Wes Anderson movies. It’s great to see local, up-and-coming artists showing their work, and I encourage everyone to visit these shows.
