The new place to stay in Portland
I recently returned from the mecca of DIY design-y goodness (Portland, OR) and do not have enough superlatives to convey the rarefied ReadyMade-ness of the new Ace Hotel downtown. The imaginations behind the project have created an exquisitely hand-wrought and familiar vibe while simultaneously demonstrating a breathtaking sense of style and down-to-earth artistry. The building went up in 1912, and many of the buidling’s original features and fixtures have been preserved. It covers an entire city block, but no detail has been overlooked. Upon entering my room, I was greeted by a wall-size mural and an ode to “the Oregonian Gentlemen”—a man who “tips street musicians,” “jumps into freezing rivers to save injured wildlife,” and “often resembles a beaver or squirrel due to his so-called ‘junk collection.’” I, of course, fell instantly in love with both the Oregonian Gentleman and my room.
Iron pipes hold organic cotton towels, paint cans hold collect your refuse, custom wool army blankets emblazoned with deer keep you warm, and, in case you get lost, a hand-stitched evacuation route map is posted above each door. But this is just the beginning. Other perks include a most excellent Stumptown coffeebar and an ATM machine clad in a hand-knitted cozy. It’s hard to believe that rates start at only $95 per night.
The place is a perfect fit for anyone with any sense of self-worth, but ESPECIALLY for ReadyMakers. You simply must go and sleep with them. I promise you won’t have any morning regrets.
