Palm Saturday

Living in California, I’m pretty much surrounded by palm trees. Which is a good thing, because I’m more than a little obsessed with palm trees. (I blame Raymond Chandler and David Lynch for feeding the fixation.) Last Christmas, I was pleased as punch to receive a potted palm from San Francisco’s Palm Broker, part of Flora Grubb Gardens. I had just accidentally murdered my last palm (death by drowning), and so spent an hour hounding the knowledgable staff about my latest attempt at green thumbery. The tree, I’m happy to report, is still growing strong, and I recently learned that Flora Grubb moved to a new location in Bayview. This Saturday, they’re hosting—along with Ritual Coffee Roasters (the city’s finest purveyor of caffeine), the Black Rock Arts Foundation, and the art and technology site Laughing Squid—an event called Paradise Lost. There will be art on display (including ubiquitous Burning Man-style fire pieces, a must-have at any San Francisco event), a theremin lounge band, and a visitation from Cyclecide. I promise not to kill any trees.
