Lend a helping hat
Sweater weather is finally here. But for folks undergoing chemo, it’s their chilly heads—rather than their shivering torsos—that need some fuzzy comfort. Bay Area crafters can help warm their bare noggins this weekend by heading over to San Francisco’s Craft Gym for a cozy chemo-cap-making party on Sunday, November 11, from noon-3 p.m.
Knitters, crocheters, and stitchers of all skill levels are welcome, so don’t worry if your needles are a little rusty. Craft Gym instructors will be on hand to assist with step-by-step instructions and free cap patterns. (I have a feeling their approach is much gentler than the trainers at those other gyms.) And if you really don’t know what you’re doing, they’ll kindly provide pre-made caps for you to embellish with ribbons, buttons, or appliqués. Simply visit Craft Gym’s web site to RSVP and review the project material list.
All the finished hats will be given to the adult and children’s oncology units at UCSF’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. So start stretching those fingers. This might be your most rewarding workout ever.
Not in the Bay Area? You can still help. Check out the like-minded organization Head Huggers, which distributes comfy caps to cancer patients and other people who have undergone hair loss.
