The Giving eTree
When it comes to gift-giving, it’s the thought that counts, right? In this digital age of Second Life and virtual gift giving, the saying has never been truer. Now Mokugift.com is taking it to the next level with eTrees, which users can send to their friends for a mere $1 per tree. In exchange for this nominal fee, recipients not only get their virtual gifts (which they can proudly display on their virtual island), but a very real tree is planted somewhere in the world.
The San Francisco-based site achieves its real tree planting through a partnership with the nonprofit organization Sustainable Harvest International, which plants the seedlings in countries like Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. The species of your gift will vary depending on the reforesting needs of the area, but those planted so far have included mahogany, cedar, coffee, and cocoa. And while Mokogift’s virtual tree farm is certainly part of a company that’s turning real profit, at least your real dollar will contribute to a tangible effort.
