Collector’s item
There’s nobility in being a starving artist. But a starving art collector? Not so much. To keep art aficionados well-fed, a canvas of affordable art sites (Tiny Showcase, 20×200) has sprung up. Removing the barrier-to-entry even further are a new breed of art subscription services that ship original works to your door at regular intervals.
We recently wrote about The Thing, which sends out quarterly domestic works by the likes of Miranda July and Anne Walsh. And newcomer The Present Group has just unveiled a subscription service they liken to a mutual fund that produces art instead of profits:
“As a private grant-giving organization, it enables a community of subscribers to support contemporary artists and receive original artwork in return. With The Present Group everyone benefits. Artists gain a new avenue of support. Subscribers receive exclusive and compelling works of art. The world gets an accessible resource and welcoming meeting place devoted to contemporary art.”
For $150 clams you get:
- Four limited-edition works by four different contemporary artists
- A signed and numbered certificate of authenticity for each piece
- The honor of having helped an artist eat a little better
Collect them all!
