PIY: Publish-it-yourself
Self-publishing used to mean shelling out your own money for printing costs and spending countless hours at Kinko’s explaining your vision to the uninterested staff. Aspiring authors, fret no more. A brand-new site called Wordclay is on a mission to transform the daunting task of publishing a manuscript into a free, five-step process.
The concept is simple: Once your page-turner is complete, you can upload the text, categorize what type of read it is, design a cover, pick a selling price, and approve it for publishing. Readers can then buy your book and have it printed on demand (think Cafe Press for publishing). Of course, the site takes a slice of your profit pie (as any publisher would) but it’s a great way to get your memoir or seedy romance novel on the market without any upfront costs.
