Inside the designer’s studio

Have you ever wondered, whilst wandering the winding, arrow-embossed paths of Ikea, how some of the more well-designed wares came to be? Well, the secrets are out: As part of the Swedish mega-retailer’s new Design Stories series, many of its in-house designers are sharing their instances of inspiration and “ah ha.” Coupled with amusing animation and sound effects, the anecdotal tales are entertaining and insightful, even if they are about mass-produced goods. (I especially enjoyed Ehlen Johansson’s recollection of a trip to test tube manufacturer that inspired the PS vase/candlestick.) Now if only Ikea would offer up the onus behind the Expedit—as evidenced by the current issue of the magazine, ReadyMade has certainly found it inspirational!
