Off the wagon

As I’ve written before, I have a very love-hate relationship with Los Angeles and its sprawl. And it seems that Ian James—a friend of a friend and a grad student at CalArts—harbors a similar sentiment. The difference between us is that he’s actually doing something about it; last year, he converted the back of his Ford Escort station wagon into a functioning garden-on-wheels planted with vegetation native to Southern California. His reasoning? During his hour-long daily commute, James drives by subdivision after subdivision. And though the developments may create much-needed housing for residents of the city, the little boxes inevitably ruin the area’s natural environment. As an inspiring art piece and political statement on land use, the Garden Wagon stands on its own. Check out his blog to follow its growth.
