How to: Recycle small gadgets for free
My 2004 iPod Mini has seen better days. I can forgive the monochrome display and the scratched-up exterior, but its battery life is shot. M.I.A. can’t even get through a whole song before the little guy turns itself off—which means no soundtrack for even my walk to the gym, let alone my workout.
But as much as I hate the concept of disposable technology, at least I know where to recycle it: The U.S. Postal Service has launched a free “Mail Back” program for small electronics like PDAs, digital cameras, and—o, the irony—iPods. And the goal is simple: To make it “easier for customers to discard used or obsolete small electronics in an environmentally responsible way.”
Postage-paid Mail Back envelopes are available for free in over 1,500 post offices nationwide. Which means I can jog over to the North Oakland location after work and send my iPod to gadget heaven, before my trip to the Y.
