Beautiful mistakes: Knitted bubbles
Penicillin isn’t the only thing that’s been discovered by accident. In the yarn world, fashion and textile designer Sara of the Crafts of Texture blog recently found out the hard (yet beautiful!) way that if she “mistakenly” washed a button into a wool sweater, the wool would hold the button’s shape once the wayward disc was removed. Inspired, she tested this “bubble knit” method by hand-sewing beads and buttons into knitted wool, washing it in warm water, and then removing the orbed objects. Then she enhanced the result (pictured here) with sequins and thread, transforming a laundry mistake into a sweater inspired by the delicate shapes of sea creatures and shells. Visit her blog for more specifics and heed her advice to use 100% wool in order to make the distinct bubbles shown here. Now a simple garter stitch can be gussied up in post-production.
