‘Til death to us drive

This beautiful new photo project by Italian photographer Matteo Ferrari reminds me a bit of the June/July issue of ReadyMade, the cover of which was inspired by a vacation photo from the 1950s (check out the Editors Letter on page 10 for more info). For Automotive Monogamy, Ferrari sought out vintage-car owners who’ve been driving the same wheels for decades, then recreated the earliest available photo of each owner with his car.
The juxtaposition of these images highlights an ideal relationship between people and their possessions. Instead of using, disposing, and upgrading, these owners cared for their cars through the years, and they seem downright happy that the vehicles are still around. Which makes it sad to think about the fact that my first car surely lies rusting in a junkyard by now, as it was likely designed for obsolescence—unlike the gems cataloged here.
