Map your ride
NYC cyclists rejoice—there now exists a web-based mapping system designed just for you. Ride the City, like Google Maps and Mapquest, finds the shortest route between two points and provides you with turn-by-turn directions. But while plotting your itinerary with the other mapping systems might have you peddling through the Queens-Midtown Tunnel or along the BQE, Ride The City looks for safer ways to ride, utilizing bike lanes and greenways as often as possible.
With clear icons that distinguish cautionary areas from those that are cyclist-friendly, the mapping program is a nice change from those that primarily serve drivers. The site is still in beta, so a few bugs are to be expected, but more user input will only help iron out the kinks and help the system spot the safest way to get where you’re going.
Just another tool trying to prevent car-on-bike violence. Here’s hoping it won’t be long before Ride the City tackles the treacherous hills of San Francisco…
