Project Realway: How to drape a muumuu
Muumuu matters: San Francisco’s Stitch Lounge has posted a great tutorial on how to transform a vintage muumuu into a drape-neck top on their urban sewing blog. Kitschy muumuus are never in short supply at thrift stores, and since they offer so much yardage, you can get a couple shirts out of just one super-sized shift. That said, if printed polyester just isn’t your thing, you can sew the Singer-sponsored pattern (available as a downloadable PDF) with one yard of any knit fabric; simply use a favorite sleeveless top for a template and then follow the instructions for cutting out the draped front. And after you’ve re-fashioned a muumuu or three, take a gander at Stitch Lounge’s tutorials page to find other projects like boatneck T-shirts, fabric belts, and fold-up shopping bags. While you’re at it, if you’re in the San Francisco area, sign up for one of their summer classes or to use the sewing machines in their lounge for an hand in creating your draped-neck tee or other muumuu mods.
