With the ubiquity of email today, fewer and fewer people send old-fashioned letters. But just as email is convenient, it is also impersonal, and utterly lacking in physical tangibility. When you hold a written letter in your hands, you get more than just the words. There is the angle of the writing, the speed of the pen, and the depth of the stroke. All of these things tell the reader a lot more about the emotional state of the writer than pixels in an email can. So the next time you want to let someone know what’s going on in your life, write a letter. And for an added touch of class, use a handmade quill.

I came across a blog entry on Make the other day about shoes made from recycled materials. A brief search turned up a bunch more companies that do the same thing. Most of these companies recycle old tires to make the soles of their shoes. A little more searching and I found out that cultures all over the world have been making tires into shoes for years, probably for as long as there have been rubber tires. They’re not as pretty as the ones you can buy, but you can make your own sandals.

I love disassembling electronic devices. Sometimes I do it to fix them. Sometimes I do it to get raw materials. Sometimes I do it just because I love taking things apart. When I’m dismantling something, I often get stuck and can’t see how to break the thing down into smaller pieces, without actually breaking it. Apparently I’m not the only one

Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side and a dark side, and it binds the Universe together. It really is pretty amazing. Incredibly versatile, you can use it to fix just about anything. You can also use it to make stuff - wallets (1 or 2), bookmarks, bags, sandals, or prom wear. You can even use it to remove warts!
