Many crafty projects require the use of rope. Macrame anyone? Hammocks, shelving, finishes for railings, bannisters, etc. (ever been on a navy ship?) put knots of all kinds to good use. Learning how to tie various knots is probably not something you’d think would be easy online.

If you’re anything like me, you love getting new gear to play with while you’re hiking, camping, climbing, biking, etc. If you’re even more like me, you hate paying retail for it. Who doesn’t need some more LEDs in their life? Whether on a bike, a backpack, a pair of shoes, or on a necktie, these are simple enough to go anywhere. And cheap enough to be almost disposable. They even have a pretty ingenious on/off switch.

On a recent shopping trip to eBay, I was looking for a knife for use while camping, hiking, and climbing. There were a ton of rambo style “survival” knives, none of which would help me survive even had I found myself without compass, tree saw, and/or waterproof matches.
I did come across an interesting listing, which upon further searching, led me to some more national transportation safety administration listings. Since 9.11, nail clippers, travel scissors and the like have been confiscated en masse from air travel passengers. Where do all those instruments of geriatric terror wind up? Glad you asked.
