ON NEWSTANDS NOW

After neatly stacking dirty plate pyramids in our communal kitchen sink, ReadyMade got to work on an Organization Issue. Tidy up everything from a bathroom cupboard to your ever-swelling magazine collection. Plus: Make a rug from felt, a floor lamp with a camera tripod, and a new chair from an old cable-knit sweater.

Inspired by our Expedit-clad offices and websites like Ikeahacker, we appointed three designers to reimagine our favorite squarest-of-square shelving units. Boldly rising to the challenge, our team came up with a custom coffee table, credenza, and more for our Get Organized Issue.

MacGyver Winner

Downpour! Our offices in Berkeley, California are tres damp. Many of our staffers’ umbrellas have been savaged by the walk to work and are begging for retirement. Conveniently, this month’s MacGyver challenge is to creatively reinvent broken ‘brellas. Maria Javornik and Jennifer Salas of Madison, Wisconsin have shown us what to do with our battered bumbershoots and our bountiful stacks of back issues (Thanks for the magazine rack, ladies!). Check out the always amazing runners up.

Up Next - Luggage: Has your suitcase on wheels quit, you know…rolling? ReadyMade challenges you, MacGyver-style, to take those old bags to new places. Deliver your luggage re-design instructions or photos to our offices by March 17, 2008 for the chance to win a year’s subscriptio and a ReadyMade T-shirt: MacGyver Challenge, 817 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, CA 94710 or articles@readymademag.com.

Baby Dee
Safe Inside the Day
(Drag City Records)
On her new album, Safe Inside the Day, Baby Dee—singer, harpist, pianist, songwriter, and transsexual queer activist—offers her listeners a jolt of staggering musical storytelling, set in falsetto. We’re as taken with her vaudevillian theatric sensibilities as we are with her surprising song titles and lyrics (“I’m looking back from eyes that roll back white, and I talk in tongues of blood and bite,” from “The Only Bones That Show”). Teaming up with indie favorites like Andrew WK, Lia Kessell, and Max Moston (from Antony and the Johnsons), as well as Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Matt Sweeney (who also produced her album) is just icing.
