Dear ReadyMakers,

Do you have a creative project that you think would really take off / make a difference if only you had the contacts and funds to execute it?

ReadyMade Editor Derek Fagerstrom and his wife Lauren did too, and recently took the plunge, opening a novelty store in San Francisco to complement their already bustling online destination, The Curiosity Shoppe.

In the spirit of inspiration, ReadyMade hereby offers some tips and resources for getting started on your project, whether its opening an arts studio for homeless youth or getting your craft business up online.

You can do it!

Tips from ReadyMade's Projects Editor

Get advice from people who know what the heck they are doing: There are people willing to help and in many cases FOR FREE! Crazy, but true.

Do-It-Together: we recruited every friend and friend-of-friend we could: "have fun making stuff" suddenly turned into a big, creative, collaborative adventure.

Set doable goals and deadlines: we broke our "to-do" list down by month, week, day, and hour. We set an opening date and worked backwards.

Give yourself a break: There will always be more to do, regardless how organized you are. And you know what? So what?! Go buy you and your hard working friends some ice cream.

Enjoy the process: we considered every single part of the project a learning experience, and dang, we learned a lot! Just kept chanting "It'll all be worth it"- it is!

Tips on starting a business

Have a creative project?

Toyota wants you to be part of a network of young, creative individuals called HEYA, whose founding question is "What can we do together?"

HEYA.toyota.com is a gathering space for creative thinkers to explore this question in an online environment that is part art studio, part inventor's garage and part screening room.

HEYA is limited to 500 members and US residents only so log on to HEYA.toyota.com for consideration and your project may be eligible for a $2500 sponsorship from Toyota!

Imprint Culture Lab

The Imprint Culture Lab was a 2-day conference exploring Asian pop culture in America. Developed by Intertrend Communications and Giant Robot, attendees had the opportunity to take part in HEYA-sponsored Pika Pika workshops (also known as "lighting animation films") among a plethora of other activities. Toy designer and Imprint guest, David Horvath, chatted up the HEYA Live Forum board and hosted a HEYA-sponsored, bento box luncheon.

Maker Faire » Austin, TX

Along with ReadyMade and hundreds of other creative types, HEYA set up camp in Austin to celebrate arts, music, engineering, science projects and the DIY mindset. HEYA was on site as the sponsor of an interactive art car build featuring expert "Makers" and attendees.
