Your newly rented digs sure looked quaint from the outside—but why are the Muppet Babies bordering your new bedroom? To avoid sleeping in a nursery, follow these wallpaper removal tips and convert your walls from patterned to pristine in no time—just don’t forget to cover your floor with drop cloths first!
1. Some wallpaper is designed to simply peel away. Try using your fingers first. If they don’t work, try a knife, razorblade, or wallpaper scrape. These sharp tools also come in handy when removing any sticky residue the wallpaper leaves behind.
2. If peeling doesn’t work, use hot water or a wallpaper steamer to melt away pesky glue. At this point, a sponge and a wide putty knife might come in handy. Soak the wall until the glue loosens, then pull to your heart’s content. (Note: If you’re dealing with paper-faced wallboards, skip to Step 3 as moisture can do more harm than good in these cases.)
3. Here’s a natural alternative to chemical enzymes for tackling wallpaper stuck on delicate, paper-faced wallboards: Mix up a solution consisting of equal parts of hot water and white vinegar. Apply to walls as in step 2 to gently and effectively soften the glue.
Now that you’ve got the skill set, it’s time to pick out your paper. Start by checking out some of these great online resources:
